Wendy Goldman’s deep understanding of the creative process, background in improvisational theatre, and extensive knowledge of the film and television industry make her an ideal teacher for anyone interested in perfecting their craft. A writer herself, Wendy’s classes are a fun and supportive environment where ideas can flourish without risk. Especially designed to appeal to writers from any discipline, novice to experienced, students are encouraged to learn and grow at their own pace. Plus, there are snacks. After many years teaching in LA, Wendy brings her much-loved Improv for Writing and Intro to TV Comedy Writing workshops to New York.
INTRO TO TV COMEDY WRITING
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to create your own TV show?
This class will guide you to begin developing an original comedy pilot. All you need are the seeds of an idea that captures your imagination. We’ll work together to bring that idea to life with a focus on crafting vivid characters, which are the fundamental building blocks of effective storytelling.
In this class, we’ll screen and analyze a variety of TV comedies with unforgettable characters and crack the code of how their relationships keep us coming back week after week. Writing exercises will give you the tools to explore your own characters’ inner lives and the emotions that drive them.
New and experienced writers welcome. Hone your individual comedic voice in a fun, supportive setting. You’ll leave with a head start on a TV show that only you can create.
“Working with Wendy has brought my TV comedy writing to a new level, and she is now my go-to person to workshop a project. After taking the Intro to TV Comedy Writing workshop last fall, I have finally placed as a second rounder in the Austin Film Festival Writing Competition and a major network is reading my latest TV pilot. The tools she shares on creating character bring them to life on the page in a very real and relatable way. And that has made all the difference for my writing.”
“The final product I was able to get to with Wendy’s tutelage is one that I feel so immensely proud of, sometimes I can’t believe I wrote it. Whether you have fully fleshed out concept for a show or just a little seed of an idea, I highly recommend taking Wendy’s class. I wouldn’t be the writer I am today without having taken it. Oh, and she’s funny as hell, so get ready to laugh.”
IMPROV FOR WRITING
Want to write something new and unexpected? This class uses improv writing games to inspire creativity.
Remember the sense of freedom you had as a kid when you were making stuff up with your friends? There were no rules, no limits. Improv can help get you back in touch with that playful part of yourself and silence the inner critic. It can inform the way you write and develop characters, as well as help you find your unique voice.
For those who feel you have a writer inside, or just want to explore writing, this class is ideal. For professional writers, it’s an opportunity to have fun and connect with why you wanted to write in the first place.
Nothing to prepare. No homework. No performing. The class is intended to be light, deep, serious, funny, whatever the moment calls for. It is process oriented rather than results oriented. But the short pieces you create could be the seeds of longer projects you never dreamed of writing. A play? Novel? Screenplay? When you let go of the reins, no telling how you’ll surprise yourself.
Care to play?
“If you have the opportunity to work with Wendy Goldman, take it. I took Goldman’s class “Improv for Writing” and it was a creative shot in the arm. I had spent 18 years writing in advertising before taking the class, so my sense of my own voice was just about gone. As a result of the class and working with her privately, I actually jumped two levels in advertising. I also went back to working on my own stuff. She’s so incredibly insightful into the writing traps people fall into, I never had a stumble she wasn’t able to walk me through. She’s very supportive. I’ve taken A LOT of writing classes and workshops and there is no writing instructor I would recommend more highly than Goldman. A+”
“I am 55. I have taken a lot of writing workshops, and Improv for Writing remains my very favorite workshop ever. Improv for Writing is a constant thrill ride of a writing adventure that starts as you step in the room and lets you out only when the last prompt is over, its echoes staying with you giving you creative courage as you go back to your own writing projects. The writing experiments were fresh, arresting, exciting––sparking new ideas and pushing me into unchartered territory. When it was over, I felt spent, like after great sex. I felt deeply satisfied, but wanted more.”

“Wendy is a godsend! She understands that any story should take its characters and the audience on a rewarding emotional journey. But her true gift is helping writers find themselves in their stories, so that they are told with more truth, passion, and humor. Many times I have been lost in a sea of notes and Wendy has masterfully helped me navigate through them while staying true to myself and my vision.”
“She works with you on your writing, but also works with your mindset as a writer. Her creative instincts are spot on, but her real gift is being able to help you focus and draw out what you want to say. Can’t recommend her enough!”
